Statement on Eve of Kenya Elections
Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Karen Bass (D-Calif.), Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa released the following statement on the eve of Kenya's presidential, parliamentary and local elections:
“Tomorrow, Kenyans head to the polls to cast their ballots in elections to be held at national and local levels. They do so with great excitement and anticipation of a future rooted in the democratic process. In the first major elections since the tragic events of 2007, it is my sincere and deep hope that tomorrow's elections will show to all Kenyans, the region and the world that Kenya as East Africa’s economic engine is prepared for fair, transparent and nonviolent elections.
“Kenyans everywhere have an opportunity to show that democracy is alive and strong and that the best mechanism to address grievances isn’t through violence, but rather a stable and fair democratic process.
“I look forward to following news reports on tomorrow's elections and joining in the festivities that acknowledge yet another victory for democracy in Africa and around the globe.”
