Rep. Karen Bass Statement on President Obama Urging Congress to Enact a Sequestration Deal

Feb 5, 2013 Issues: Jobs & the Economy

Washington, D.C.  –  Today, Congresswoman Karen Bass (D-Calif) issued the following statement in response to President Obama's statement urging Congress to enact a short-term sequestration deal if a larger proposal cannot be reached before these devastating cuts take effect:

“I applaud the President’s commitment to working with Congress to find a responsible balanced way to deal with sequestration.  If Congress will not act on a larger deal before sequestration takes effect, then the responsible thing to do is pass a smaller balanced package of legislation so we can keep our economy moving in the right direction as the President called for today.

“It’s been said the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting a different result.  Continuing to create one economic crisis after another by refusing to deal with our fiscal challenges in a responsible balanced way is the height of insanity.  House Democrats have offered a balanced plan that House Republicans refuse to bring up for a vote. By offering our own plan, Democrats have shown we stand ready to enact a balanced approach to deal with our long-term fiscal challenges.  Time will tell if my Republican colleagues will join us or insist on more gimmicks that only create economic uncertainty and hurt job growth.”
