“I’m encouraged that the Trump administration and the State Department are expressing interest in staffing important U.S. diplomatic posts in African countries. This is absolutely essential to bettering our relationship with the countries on the continent and the economic opportunities they offer.
“Kidnapping should always be condemned, especially if it involves more than 70 children.
“Last night, armed separatists kidnapped 79 students and three staff from a Presbyterian boarding school in Cameroon’s Northwest anglophone region. This is the most recent example of how citizens, especially children, are increasingly the ones who suffer the most from terrorist activity.
“Adoption impacts millions of Americans every year,” Rep. Bass said. “Each November, we must take the time to further understand adoption and reassert our promise to continue to work to find solutions that help children find forever families. I’m especially encouraged by the growing inclusion of foster care and adoption in the definition of a modern family.
“I am encouraged by the First Lady’s trip to the continent,” said Rep. Bass. “I hope that during her trip she was able to see the critical work of the U.S. Agency for International Development and the benefits of the contributions that our country makes every day across Africa.
“I’m pleased to see that the FAA Reauthorization Package has been signed into law,” said Rep. Bass. “Swift implementation of this bill, especially the factors designed specifically to address aircraft noise is absolutely paramount and should be a priority of the FAA. What I’ve said time and time again, though, is that this is not a time to celebrate.
“With the rise of substance abuse highlighted by the opioid epidemic, more and more kinship caregivers are stepping up to raise children in need of temporary care or permanent homes,” said Rep. Bass. “This is happening in every state and every county in the United States. While we work to address this immediate epidemic, our child welfare systems are being overwhelmed.
