“I hope all Americans will join me in honoring the memories of all transgender people who are victims of violence, here and around the globe,” said Rep. Bass. “Too often, transgender people, especially transgender people of color, face discrimination in employment, housing, and health care.
“Los Angeles currently has an overall housing vacancy rate of two percent, so even if you have money, you can have a hard time finding housing,” Rep. Bass said. “As rents increase because of scarce supply, people are finding themselves in difficult situations. The goal of this event was to connect people with the organizations and services that can help folks to improve their situation.
"Los Angeles has lost a great leader. I’m saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. David Cunningham, a champion for accessible, affordable housing and a true community leader. Among his major contributions to our city, Mr. Cunningham served on the Los Angeles City Council for 13 years in the 1970s and 1980s and represented many Angelenos, including myself, at that post.
“Today, we honor the selfless bravery that millions of veterans across the country have offered during their lifetimes. This commitment to the protection of our freedoms and democracy, whether it be voluntarily or by the result of a draft, deserves our recognition, admiration, and unadulterated gratitude.
We often forget that women’s rights are human rights. The mass incarceration policies in this country caters to for-profit prisons and only incentivizes the detention and incarceration of more individuals, many of which are vulnerable women who flee their home countries escaping gang-related and sexual violence,” said Rep.
“I’m deeply saddened by this devastating attack. 36 days of thoughts and prayers from Congress since our country’s worst mass shooting in history obviously haven’t worked. It’s time to stop favoring the gun lobby over the lives of community members. We need reform.”
