100 FORMER FOSTER YOUTH TO SHADOW HOMETOWN MEMBERS OF CONGRESS FOR 5TH ANNUAL SHADOW DAY

WASHINGTON – Capitol Hill hallways will be buzzing with blue this week, when 100 former foster youth donning teal sashes to represent National Foster Care Month visit their Members of Congress to learn how bills become laws and share their experiences in the nation’s child welfare system. The event, in its fifth year, is hosted by the Congressional Caucus on Foster Youth (CCFY).

The group will also visit the White House, participate in a town hall with Members of Congress and view a screening of the television show “The Fosters,” a series about a foster family that examines the challenges facing this vulnerable population.

They will also hear from Darryl McDaniels, one of the founding members of the legendary, hip hop group Run-DMC, at the Foster Youth Shadow Day luncheon. Mr. McDaniels, who was adopted, co-founded The Felix Organization, a nonprofit that provides inspiring opportunities and new experiences to enrich the lives of children who are growing up in the foster care system.

WHAT:          5th Annual Foster Youth Shadow Day

The 150-plus, bipartisan caucus is co-chaired by Reps. Karen Bass (D-Calif.), Tom Marino (R-Penn.), Jim McDermott (D-Wash.), Diane Black (R-Tenn.), Trent Franks (R-Ariz.) and Jim Langevin (D-R.I.). In addition to Shadow Day, the group has regular staff- and Member-level policy briefings to discuss pressing issues of interest around improving the state of the nation’s foster care system.
