August 24, 2021
Press Release
Washington, DC - Today, Representatives Gregory W. Meeks, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Karen Bass, Chair of the Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, and Global Human Rights, issued the following statement on the White House announcement of a Presidential Delegation to the Republic of Zambia to attend the inauguration of His Excellency Hakainde Hichilema:

“On the Republic of Zambia’s inauguration day, we commend President-Elect Hakainde Hichilema, former President Edgar Lungu, and the Zambian people’s commitment to a peaceful transition of power. Zambia’s transition demonstrates how the people’s will to uphold these democratic principles has borne fruit for those who have sacrificed much to see this day. We congratulate the people of Zambia, including the youth who turned out in record numbers, for their steadfast commitment to exercising their right to vote. The United States will continue to support our Zambian partners in their efforts to improve economic development, promote youth engagement, and advance democracy as the cornerstone of good governance in Zambia.”
