Rep. Bass Calls for the Immediate Release of Mali’s Transitional Government

May 25, 2021
Press Release
WASHINGTON - Today, Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA), Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, issued the following statement:

“I call for the immediate release of President Bah Ndaw, Prime Minister Moctar Ouane, and Defense Minister Souleymane Doucoure, who were recently seized by the Mali’s military forces. There has been tension between the civilian government and the military since last August when former President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta was overthrown. Mali’s transitional government must be able to act independently of the military to create an environment where free, transparent, inclusive, and fair elections can proceed in 2022. I support the transition of power and urge the military to release President Ndaw and his Cabinet immediately, and those who committed these crimes must be held accountable by the international community.”
