Rep. Bass Condemns Transitional Government Take over and detention of PM Hamdok by Sudanese Military

October 25, 2021
Press Release
WASHINGTON - Today, Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA), Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, issued the following statement:

"I condemn the ongoing military coup that is threatening Sudan’s political transition, and I urge the Sudanese military to immediately release Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and all others unlawfully detained. I have met Prime Minister Hamdok on several occasions and was hopeful that Sudan would make a peaceful transition to democracy.

"I implore the military to adhere to the constitutional declaration signed in 2019, which was a negotiated agreement for an eventual civilian-led government through democratic elections.  I urge for an constructive, open dialogue involving all sides that upholds the negotiated agreement and allows the will of the Sudanese people to be heard.  If the military takeover continues, instability will ensue in Sudan, undermining hard won political gains, threatening humanitarian efforts, and jeopardizing the safety and security of the Sudanese people."
