Rep. Bass Congratulates Assemblymember Dr. Shirley Weber on Appointment as California's Secretary of State

WASHINGTON - Today, Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA) issued the following statement after Assemblymember Dr. Shirley Weber was appointed to serve as California's Secretary of State. Prior to being elected to the California State Assembly in 2012, Dr. Weber served on the San Diego Board of Education, and as a Professor of African-American Studies at San Diego State University.
"Congratulations to the Chair of the California Legislative Black Caucus – my friend Dr. Shirley Weber – on her appointment to serve California as the next Secretary of State.
"Dr. Weber has been an absolute champion in the fight for equity. Whether it’s through reforming our criminal justice system or ensuring that every Californian has equal access to a quality education, Dr. Weber is a consistently on the frontlines of necessary battles to better our state.
"I know Dr. Weber will ensure that our state’s elections will continue to be transparent, accessible and fair as long as she serves in this role."
