Rep. Bass on the Escalated Violence in Northern DRC

March 23, 2021
Press Release
WASHINGTON - Today, Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA), Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Africa, issued the following statement

“I am deeply concerned by the escalated violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and about the growing crisis in the Great Lakes region writ large. The conflict in northeastern DRC has worsened since the start of the year, leading to the deaths of hundreds of people, and forcing tens of thousands from their homes with nearly 20 million dealing with food insecurity.

"According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) has committed the majority of the recent violence displacing approximately 40,000 in North Kivu and Ituri. The group has kidnapped citizens, raided villages, killed innocent people, and burned down homes. This is compounded with the vast other armed groups in northeastern DRC fighting for political power and control of the country’s multitude of resources.

"I urge the Government of the DRC to investigate and prosecute all perpetrators of human rights abuses and to strengthen the judicial system and the rule of law, and to resolve conflict peacefully. I also urge the international community to use every tool available to reduce conflict in the region and help strengthen the country’s democratic governance.”
