Rep. Bass, House Members Demand Trump Provide Better Response in Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Affected Caribbean Islands

Press Release
WASHINGTON – Today, Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.) signed two separate letters urging the President to implement specific solutions that will help save millions of lives in Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the rest of the Caribbean. The first effort demands that the Department of Defense deploy additional resources to aid recovery efforts in Puerto Rico. The second requested that any additional emergency supplemental funding for Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria also include other affected Caribbean islands as well.

“The Jones Act has finally been waived but there’s still much to be done. The decimation being faced by millions of Americans in Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the chain of Caribbean islands is devastating to say the least,” Rep. Bass said. “Today, I’m proud to join the continuing efforts to ensure that appropriate, lifesaving aid is being efficiently delivered to those hardest hit by the recent string of hurricanes in the Caribbean. No power for six months means a lack of necessary medical support for seniors, extreme heat in over-crowded airports, and inhibited rescue efforts. This is a matter of life or death.

“In addition to fighting for relief, I hope this fight acts against stigmas that the men, women, and children living on these islands are no less American than me. There are millions of Americans on these islands and they deserve the full, unquestioning and unwavering support and efforts of the United States government. Anything less is criminal.”
