Rep. Bass Issues Statement on Potential Deportation of Cameroonians

February 2, 2021
Press Release
WASHINGTON - Today, Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA) issued the following statement about the pending deportations of asylum seekers from Cameroon.

“I am troubled by the recent reporting of plans to deport Cameroonian refugees and asylum seekers. These deportations would continue a trend of denying asylum seekers and returning them to harmful situations. The reported violence and humanitarian crisis surrounding the conflict in Cameroon is escalating by the day with civilians and even children being killed. There has been documentation of widespread human rights violations in Cameroon including kidnapping, sexual assault, and extrajudicial executions, and many who are deported face imminent harm.  I urge the halt of the removal of Cameroonians until a fair, thorough, and transparent investigation is complete.  We must uphold the commitments under international treaties to protect refugees and asylum seekers everywhere.”
