Rep. Bass Issues Statement On Recent Events In Ethiopia

August 10, 2021
Press Release
WASHINGTON - Today, Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA), Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, issued the following statement:

"I am deeply concerned by the recent calls from the Government of Ethiopia to expand the size of its armed forces. I am also deeply concerned by the actions of the Tigray Defense Force as they have expanded their military engagement and fighting in Amhara and Afar. This expansion has resulted in human rights violations and increased suffering, and it raises grave concerns about the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Lalibela. These violent armed escalations are displacing the people of Ethiopia; disrupting planting and harvest; preventing the disbursement of humanitarian aid and commercial goods; and compounding the plight of more than 500,000 Ethiopians who are facing life threatening levels of food insecurity. All parties to the conflict should engage in good faith with the internationally-led negotiation process and work to find an equitable solution for everyone to this crisis.

"It is encouraging to hear that the UNHCR recently regained access to the refugee camps in Mai Aine and Adi Harush. While this is an important step in the right direction, it is also critical that humanitarian efforts be allowed to provide food and supplies throughout the country to those in need."
