Rep. Bass Issues Statement Regarding Elections in Ethiopia

October 4, 2021
Press Release
WASHINGTON - Today, Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA), Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, issued the following statement:

“With Prime Minister Abiy being sworn in for a second five-year term, I am now hopeful that he will work towards a political solution to the ongoing crisis rather than a military one. I am also hopeful that this election, which included votes held on September 30 in certain regions where citizens were unable to participate in June due to insecurity, will give the government the chance to renew its commitment to reform and enhance the country’s human rights situation. The people of Ethiopia want him to put an end to the war that started in the Tigray region and progressed to the Afar and Amhara regions of the country, where thousands have been killed, people are facing food insecurity, and the economy weakened.”
