Rep. Bass Issues Statement on the Resurgence of COVID-19 in Africa
“This global pandemic is affecting everyone, regardless of political affiliation, race, social or economic status, gender, or location in the world. The numbers are spiking on the continent, but Africa has dealt with pandemics and has a lot more experience than many other regions of the world. I know the continent has exceptional expertise to organize targeted vaccination campaigns, and I believe with strong international support, they will have the capabilities to get their citizens tested regularly and introduce vaccines to the public.
"I would like to extend my condolences to the families of the Prime Minister of Eswatini, Ambrose Dlamini, who died in December just weeks after contracting Covid-19; Zimbabwe’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sibusiso Moyo, and Cabinet Minister, Ellen Gwaradzimba, and two other colleagues in the Presidential Cabinet; South African Cabinet Minister, Jackson Mthembu; and former Nigerian Minister of Justice, Abdullahi Ibrahim, who all recently passed away due to Covid-19 complications.
"Now that we finally have an Administration that is taking COVID-19 seriously, administering more vaccines, and mandating mask wearing, the United States must also ensure vaccinations and treatments are equitably available to citizens in developing nations, just as in higher-income countries.”
