Rep. Bass Names Dr. Janette Yarwood as Next Africa Subcommittee Democratic Staff Director
“Dr. Yarwood comes to us from the State Department where she was the Chair of the Sub-Saharan Africa Area Studies at the Foreign Service Institute. In that role, she was responsible for all aspects of the program including regional training for the Department of State and other US government employees preparing for an overseas assignment across Africa or covering Africa from the United States. Before joining the Department of State, she was a Research Staff Member in the Africa Program at the Institute for Defense Analysis where her work focused on U.S. foreign policy and national security issues relating to sub-Saharan Africa.
“She is a Fulbright Scholar and holds a Ph.D. in cultural anthropology from the Graduate Center, City University of New York. Her academic research has focused on democratization and youth-led popular protests across Sub-Saharan Africa and she recently began a research project of urbanization and megacities. Dr. Yarwood has also conducted research on a wide range of areas including democracy and governance; foreign direct investment; human rights issues related to activists, journalists and civil society more broadly; and the intersection of arts and activism. She has traveled and conducted research in Angola, Guinea Bissau, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Namibia, Senegal, South Africa, and Zimbabwe and has been a visiting scholar at the University of Cape Town and the West African Research Center in Dakar, Senegal. She has taught courses on political developments in Africa at the City College of New York and Monmouth University.”
