Rep. Bass Praises Biden Administration For Honoring Commitment to Fighting For Racial Equity

April 29, 2021
Press Release
WASHINGTON – Today, Reps. Karen Bass (D-CA), issued the following statement after the Food and Drug Administration announced it would take steps to ban menthol flavored cigarettes and all flavored cigars.

“Today’s action is consistent with the Biden administration’s commitment to advancing racial equity and addressing health disparities in this country with fact-based, scientific action. The tobacco industry must no longer be permitted to use menthol cigarettes to profit at the expense of the health of Black Americans.

“This move by the Food and Drug Administration in the face of well-funded public misinformation campaigns advances our goal of striving to end tobacco use and preventing tobacco-caused diseases and premature deaths – both of which are issues of public safety and racial equity. It is especially important that today’s announcement that a proposed rule is expected for public comment means we are not starting over from square one.

“I commend President Biden and his administration for honoring his pledge to follow the facts of science in his policies and for moving to advance racial equity.”
