Rep. Bass Statement on the Bombing of a UN Convoy in Mali

October 4, 2021
Press Release
WASHINGTON - Today, Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA), Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, issued the following statement:

"I condemn the recent bombing against UN peacekeepers that left an Egyptian UN peacekeeper dead, and four others seriously injured in Mali’s northern Kidal region. My condolences go out to the family of the Egyptian soldier who was killed, and I wish for a speedy recovery to all injured in this heinous crime.

"Unfortunately, the work of UN peacekeepers is oftentimes dangerous and their sacrifice in the name of peace is commonly unnoticed.

"There are several contentious issues at play in Mali which makes it one of the most dangerous places to serve as an UN peacekeeper including an islamist insurgency in the north and center of the country that continuously attacks civilians and peacekeepers; increased communal violence; and two military coups in the past year -- each weakening an already vulnerable state.

"The international community must be steadfast in its support of the government and people of Mali, and every effort must be made in ensuring that the perpetrators of this crime are brought to justice immediately."
