Rep. Bass Statement on the Dismissal of the Government in Tunisia

July 28, 2021
Press Release
WASHINGTON - Today, Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA), Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa issued the following statement:

"I am discouraged by the recent actions of President Kais Saied to dissolve the government and dismiss Parliament. If this is a reaction to protests by the people of Tunisia, this is troubling and imperils Tunisia’s fledgling democracy. In 2011, Tunisia emerged from the Arab Spring as a more democratic and representative country, but there has been an escalating pattern toward democratic backsliding. Slow democratic reforms, a crumbling economy, and a global slowdown due to the COVID19 pandemic have frustrated the people of Tunisia. I urge President Saied to seek a peaceful solution and to refrain from any other action that will further strain Tunisia’s democracy. I support the international community in calling for calm from all sides, but President Saied must provide an environment where people can use their voice and protest peacefully."
