Rep. Bass Statement On DRC Election Results

January 11, 2019
Press Release
WASHINGTON – Today, Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.), top Democrat serving on the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, issued the following statement regarding the election results in the Democratic Republic of Congo:

“On December 30th, after two years of delay, people across the Democratic Republic of Congo went to the polls to cast their ballots. I congratulate the Congolese people's courage and commitment to holding elections and expressing themselves peacefully.

“Now, I am concerned that the preliminary election results announced by the National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) do not match the results that were reported by domestic observers. If there are discrepancies, I urge the CENI and constitutional court to maintain transparency and impartiality throughout the process.  Transparency is critical in this post-electoral moment and will help to ensure public confidence in the electoral results.  I also call on the Congolese government to immediately restore SMS and internet access.

“Additionally, I urge all stakeholders to remain calm as the process continues. Specifically, I call on Congolese government officials and the security sector to facilitate an environment of non-violence and urge all actors to pursue any contestation of election results via peaceful, legal means. Violence by anyone is unacceptable. The actions of the Congolese government and its electoral institutions over the coming days will have enduring consequences for both Congo and the broader region. Violence does not have to be inevitable.”
