Rep. Bass Statement on Kenyan Labor Rights Activist Detained in Qatar

June 1, 2021
Press Release
WASHINGTON - Today, Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA), Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, issued the following statement:

“I urge the Qatari authorities to release Malcolm Bidali immediately. According to several reports, Mr. Bidali, a Kenyan human rights activist, was forcibly detained more than three weeks ago by Qatar state security services for peacefully exercising his right to protest the plight of migrant workers. Under the UN Declaration of Human Rights Defenders, all governments must protect citizens from harm by putting legal and social parameters in place for a safe environment for human rights defenders. By silencing Mr. Bidali’s voice, the Government of Qatar is inherently suppressing the freedom of expression of a marginalized group of migrant workers in the country and creating an environment of fear.”
