Rep. Bass Statement on Latest Violence In Sudan

June 3, 2019
Press Release
WASHINGTON – Today, Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.), Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, issued the following statement condemning the violent attacks against protesters and civilians by the Sudanese security forces.

“I am disappointed that security forces would fire live ammunition rounds causing multiple fatalities in order to disband sit-ins and peaceful protests in Sudan. I am also discouraged that the military has shut down media networks in Khartoum, which is a clear infringement upon the freedom of the press. I wholeheartedly believe the Sudanese people are not defeated by this attack and will continue to fight for their right to civilian rule through peaceful protests. I urge the Rapid Support Forces to cease using deadly force against its citizens and compel the Transitional Military Council to return to peaceful negotiations.”
