Rep. Bass Urges a Peaceful and Credible Electoral Process in Malawi’s Presidential Rerun

June 25, 2020
Press Release
WASHINGTON - Today, Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA), Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, issued the following statement.

"I urge the Government of Malawi and the opposition party to stay committed to a credible, fair, and peaceful electoral process as Malawians recast their vote in the presidential election.

"This election must reflect the will of the people, regardless of who wins, and all stakeholders should start healing deep divisions within the country caused by poverty and unemployment. I applaud the Constitutional Courts and the Malawi Supreme Court for upholding the rule of law. The rerun of elections has given citizens a second chance to exercise their rights, and the freedom to exercise their vote without the threat of harm."
