Rep. Karen Bass Statement On Cruel Trump Repeal of Temporary Protected Status for 60,000 Haitians

November 21, 2017
Press Release
LOS ANGELES – Today, Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.) issued the following statement following the announcement that Temporary Protected Status would be repealed for 60,000 Haitians by July of 2019.

“Just 7 years ago, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake devastated Haiti, killing more than 230,000 residents and displacing nearly 3 million. Since then, the resilient island nation has been plagued by compounded environmental disasters, including a cholera outbreak and most recently, a category 5 hurricane. Now, Trump has decided to eliminate protections for 60,000 Haitian immigrants, most of whom have extensive roots in this country, and deport them all by 2019. The move is not only fiscally irresponsible, but morally bankrupt.”
Rep. Bass is an original cosponsor of the American Promise Act, which would protect individuals who currently receive Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) from deportation.
