I am a member of Congress from Los Angeles. I am the highest ranking Democrat on the Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights, and International Organizations. As I look around the world I grow more concerned by the day. We stand by as the bloody civil war in Syria reaches all new levels of brutality, and we bemoan the kidnapping of over 200 Nigerian girls by religious extremists. The U.S. House of Representatives today passed legislation today authored by Congresswoman Karen Bass that would allow local transit agencies like Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority to prioritize hiring local residents for highway and transit projects. The amendment was adopted as part of the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations bill.
Los Angeles resident Toni Washington went to Capitol Hill to spend the day with Rep. Karen Bass for the third annual "Congressional Foster Youth Shadow Day." Washington joined nearly 70 other foster youth alumni from across the country who traveled to Washington to shadow members of Congress to get a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of the House of Representatives and to share their experiences in the child welfare system as a way to influence policy around foster care.
