Rep. Karen Bass Releases Statement in Support of Senate Filibuster Reform
WASHINGTON—Today, Congresswoman Karen Bass (D-Calif.) released the following statement in support of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Senate Democrats who reformed the Senate’s filibuster rules to improve the process for approving presidential appointees.
“I commend Majority Leader Reid and the 52 Senate Democrats who stood up for democracy today to ensure that President Obama’s nominees to serve in the federal government and on the federal bench will no longer be blocked by Republican obstructionists, who are using their position to prevent qualified people from serving their country.
“Senate Republicans have used the filibuster to block 82 of President Obama’s nominees, including blocking Congressional Black Caucus Member Congressman Mel Watt to lead the Federal Housing Finance Agency. This was the first time since 1843 that a filibuster successfully blocked the nomination of a sitting member of Congress.
“This action removes a major clog in our federal system, and the result will be that our judicial system and our executive branch will finally be able to get to work.”
