Rep. Karen Bass Releases Statement in Support of Fasting Immigration Advocates
WASHINGTON—Today, Congresswoman Karen Bass (D-Calif.) released the following statement in support of immigration advocates’ week-long fast outside the U.S. Capitol, calling on Speaker John Boehner to schedule a vote on immigration reform legislation:
“The advocates fasting outside the Capitol, including Mr. Dae Joong Yoon from the Korean Resource Center in my Congressional District, are shining an important spotlight on the fact that the time for Speaker Boehner to schedule a vote on immigration reform is now. Millions of immigrant voices want to come out of the shadows and be full participants in the American experience, and I commend these advocates’ efforts to press for a vote on this necessary and bipartisan legislation.
“They are representing the voice of millions of people who are not able to speak because our current immigration law is antiquated and does not reflect the reality and the needs of our country. The immigration reform bill that passed overwhelmingly in the United States Senate will start to put America on the right path to ensure that immigrants can set down the path to becoming full American citizens.
“This legislation is about the future of our country. It is about ensuring that millions of immigrants can fully participate in the American dream and the American economy. It is time for the Speaker to do his job and let Congress vote.”
