Congresswoman Karen Bass

Representing the 37th District of California

Statement on death of Mohammed Abu Khedir, Beating of Tariq Khedeir and Ongoing Violence

July 9, 2014
Press Release

Washington, DC--Congresswoman Karen Bass (D-Calif.) issued the following statement:

“My heart goes out to the parents and family of Mohammed Abu Khedir, the Palestinian boy who was burned alive apparently in revenge for the killing of the three Israeli teenagers. I am glad Israeli authorities have arrested a number of suspects in this horrific crime.

“I was also deeply saddened and troubled by the recently released video apparently showing Israeli police forces brutally beating Tariq Khdeir, an American citizen from Florida and the 15-year old cousin of Mohammed Abu Khedir. I am hopeful Israeli authorities will fully investigate the officers involved.

“I am fearful of the rising tensions and violence in the region, and I hope there will be a ceasefire soon and talks can begin again. We cannot allow children under any circumstances to bear the brunt of the conflict.”
