Statement on Escalating Violence in Sudan
WASHINGTON -- Today, U.S. Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.), senior Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health and Human Rights, made the following statement after violence continued to escalate between South Sudan and Sudan.
“I want to make clear that recent reports of bombings and incursions by Sudan into South Sudan are intolerable. I condemn the escalating violence and aggressive rhetoric by Sudan towards South Sudan and urge that military engagement by the Sudanese government come to an immediate end because true and honest peace cannot be achieved with violence at its core. Simultaneously, I strongly urge that South Sudan employ all available efforts to refrain from compounding this developing crisis while also protecting itself from current and future attack.
“The people of Sudan and South Sudan must recognize that there is not a military solution to this conflict and that peace can only be found by negotiating each other’s differences. I advocate for Sudan and South Sudan to quickly take action to cease these violent campaigns by discussing a settlement to these disputes or risk escalating additional violence and terror.
“The United States supports the work towards peace in the region and will join the entire international community as we continue to observe the situation in Sudan.”
