Representing the 37th District of California

Statement on Foreign Affairs Hearing on Conflict in Mali

February 14, 2013
Press Release

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Karen Bass (D-Calif.), Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights and International Organizations released the following statement after participating in a full committee hearing focused on the ongoing conflict in Mali:

“The situation in Mali is unique to the remarkable progress taking place across Africa where there are clear examples of sustained peace, stability, democracy and good governance. This future is possible in Mali with the continued commitment by Malians themselves along with the support of the United States and the international community to strengthen political institutions, address security concerns and hold elections.

“But let me be clear, the threat of AQIM and rogue fighters in northern Mali cannot be ignored. These groups pose internal and external threats and must be held to account for their violent actions. Pressure must be kept to ensure these groups are disbanded and not able to reconstitute themselves. It is also important that the Malian government address accusations of human rights abuses perpetrated by its own armed forces. The Mali government must move swiftly to address these very serious allegations.”
