Statement on Opposition to Budget Proposal
Washington, D.C. – Representative Karen Bass (D-Calif.) released the following statement today on the House passing the budget compromise.
"I want to thank Senator Patty Murray for her work and effort to forge a compromise with the House Republicans. Unfortunately, I could not in good conscious support legislation that did not extend unemployment insurance and still will force through cuts to vital programs while not closing corporate tax loopholes.
"Even though we did not prevail, I remain committed to passing an extension to long-term unemployment insurance. Over 214,000 Californians will lose their unemployment insurance on December 28 of this year because Republicans in Congress refused to bring an extension up for a vote. I joined 174 of my Democratic colleagues in urging Speaker Boehner not to adjourn for the end of the year until we pass this important extension, and I will continue to advocate for this crucial extension in 2013 and throughout 2014."
