Statement on LA Unified calling a special election to fill school board vacancy
Washington, DC – Representative Karen Bass (D-Calif.) released the following statement today on Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD’s) decision to fill the current board vacancy via a special election in lieu of an appointment:
“The members of the LAUSD school board have made their decision to keep this seat temporarily vacant and to call a special election instead of appointing a caretaker. Nonetheless, the six remaining board members will still have to face crucial funding decisions over the next several months, and I am hopeful that the current board members will commit to a transparent and inclusive process that will result in an equitable distribution of the new state funds that LAUSD will receive under the new state funding formula even though the District 1 seat will be empty over the next six to eight months. It was important that the board instructed district counsel to thoroughly review options for representation for this period of time, and report back next week.
"Community leaders convened their own meetings in the past few days to address this, and now more than ever, the community must remain engaged to ensure South Los Angeles schools are represented in all important matters that come before the board.”
