Statement on Senate Confirmation of Congressman Mel Watt as Federal Housing Finance Agency Director
Washington, D.C. – Representative Karen Bass (D-Calif.) released the following statement today on the U.S. Senate’s confirmation of Congressman Mel Watt as the Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA):
“It is with mixed emotions that I congratulate my friend Congressman Mel Watt on his confirmation today. Although I know that Mel will lead the FHFA with intelligence and dignity, I will miss his leadership and experience on the House Judiciary Committee and in Congress where he was someone we all looked to for legal analysis and advice.
"Mel will bring a lifetime of talent and dedication to his new position where he will combine his experience working as a real estate and business lawyer with his two decades of service in the the U.S. House, where he has been an integral voice in shaping housing policy as a member of the House Financial Services Committee. Mel has been a tireless advocate for helping homeowners and protecting consumers from the dangerous actions that led to the financial crisis in the first place.
"I can think of no other person who will bring both his experience and intelligence to running the Federal Housing Finance Agency, and he will be a constant advocate for Americans in ensuring that Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and the Federal Home Loan Banks are working on behalf of consumers and homeowners.
