Statement on South Sudan Leaders Signing Agreement to Resolve the Crisis in South Sudan
WASHINGTON, DC--Today, Congressmember Karen Bass (D-Calif.), Ranking Member of the House Subcommittee on Africa, released the following statement after South Sudan's President Salva Kiir and former Vice President Riek Macharan signed an Agreement to Resolve the Crisis in South Sudan:
"I welcome the announcement that South Sudan President Salva Kiir and former Vice President Riek Machar have signed an agreement to resolve the crisis that has taken too many lives in South Sudan, and I wish to offer my sincerest thanks to Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn for his tireless efforts to mediate a peaceful and sustainable end to the conflict.
"I also join with our National Security Advisor Susan Rice in urging President Kiir and Mr. Machar to move swiftly to honor the agreement in word and deed.
"This agreement was the result of longstanding US support to South Sudan, and cooperation with the African Union, the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the broader international community. These entities used both diplomacy and sanctions to bring both sides of this conflict to the table; so the world's youngest country can finally end the litany of grave atrocities that has killed thousands of its citizens. Now is the time for South Sudan to end this violent chapter of its history and enter into a new era of peace and prosperity. I join the chorus of world leaders in demanding for all those fighting in South Sudan to immediately put down their guns and begin building a better future for their country."
