Congresswoman Karen Bass

Representing the 37th District of California

Statement on President Obama’s State of the Union Address

January 24, 2012
Press Release

Washington, DC - U.S. Rep. Karen Bass issued the following statement after President Obama’s State of the Union address:

“Tonight’s State of the Union address provided a clear roadmap for a year of continued recovery and success through the leadership of President Obama and bipartisan cooperation in Congress.

“I agree with President Obama. The state of our union is getting stronger, but in order to build upon the successes we’ve already accomplished we must stand with him and provide middle class families, the backbone of our nation, the tools and resources they need to have a fair shot and succeed. Currently, there are millions of hard-working middle class families fighting daily to keep their heads above water as they face the risk of falling into severe poverty. The President’s plan to strengthen our economy with investments in time-honored American traditions such as manufacturing, energy, innovative skills for workers and a renewal of our core values is a solid blueprint for a prosperous future.

While we still have work to do, I am confident that our nation’s economy will get back on track if we commit to securing the economic future of the middle class. The President’s plan to create jobs through lowering tax rates for companies that manufacture in the U.S. and savings from ending the war in Iraq; reforming job training and unemployment benefit systems; supporting exceptional teachers; and putting veterans to work are just some of the ways in which we must stand with the President to reinforce the notion that America is a nation that is built to last.”
