U.S. Rep. Karen Bass’ Video Shows that Americans Looking for Work are NOT Uneducated Drug Addicts

January 25, 2012
Press Release

Washington, DC - “Last December just days before Christmas, House Republicans attempted to hijack the legislative process to prevent people who were out of work through no fault of their own from receiving unemployment benefits they desperately need. The GOP thought it would be more productive to cut unemployment benefits from 99 to 59 weeks, and require recipients to have a GED and undergo drug testing rather than develop a comprehensive plan to create jobs.

“The fact is – unemployed workers are not uneducated drug users, but hard-working people who rely on this funding to keep their families afloat during these uncertain economic times. We must make clear to Republicans that unemployment benefits kept 3.2 million people from falling over a cliff and each dollar spent generated up to $1.90 in economic growth in 2010.

“In order to paint a true picture of the “Faces of the Unemployed” I recently visited a labor workforce center in Los Angeles and spoke with several people in the community who are diligently looking for work. Through my conversations, I found what I already knew to be true, the people I met are just like you and I – they are our family, friends and neighbors who were innocent bystanders in an altercation with a sluggish economy. Although I can tell you their stories of strength and perseverance through incredibly difficult times, I invite you to watch the video below and find out firsthand the true story of the “Faces of the Unemployed”.”
