U.S. Rep. Karen Bass Statement on the House Republican’s Failure to Bring Bipartisan Senate Bill to Extend Payroll Tax Cut and Unemployment Benefits to Floor for Vote
Today, U.S. Rep. Karen Bass issued the following statement after the House Republicans announced their refusal to vote on the Senate’s bipartisan Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2011.
"Just days before Christmas it is imperative that House Republicans do not play politics with the American public’s livelihood,” said Rep. Bass. “Failing to vote on the Senate’s overwhelmingly bipartisan bill to extend the payroll tax cut and unemployment benefits is just plain wrong, especially in these uncertain economic times.”
"This version of the bill trimmed the payroll tax cut to a short-term fix because Republicans demanded it and now they are claiming it doesn’t go far enough. We cannot allow the Tea Party’s obstructionist tactics to destroy this bipartisan compromise. I urge my Republican colleagues to put politics aside this Christmas and support American families in need."
